8 Steps on How to Install an Attic Fan, Attic Depot’s Solar
Attic Fan
01. Unbox and Mark:
-
As a first step, tighten the brackets in place.
-
Then, cut the right-sized hole from the measurement mark provided on our packaging.
-
For a 14-inch fan, cut out the 14-inch template, trace the circle on your roof with a grease pencil, and make sure to install the fan 4-5 feet away from the ridge for the best performance.
02. Choose the Right Location:
-
The solar panel should be placed at a 22-30-degree angle from the level.
-
Ideally, the solar panel should face south or west to get the most sunlight.
03. Cut the Hole:
-
Start by carefully cutting the marked circle using a roofing blade to get through the shingles.
-
Then, use the cordless saw to plunge-cut the plywood underneath.
-
Make sure to cut until you reach the rafter, but stop there—don’t go beyond that!
04. Prepare Shingles:
-
Gently loosen the shingles with a pry bar around the hole, just enough to slide the fan underneath.
-
Don’t rip them off. Trim the bottom row of shingles into a square to fit the fan tightly.
05. Dry Fit the Fan:
-
Dry fit the fan to ensure it fits properly in the hole all the way under the loosened shingles.
06. Install the Thermostat:
-
Install the thermostat and then drop the thermostat into the opening. It will activate the fan when the attic reaches about 85°F.
07. Secure the Fan:
-
Use screws to attach the fan to the roof. First, start at the bottom and then work your way up.
-
Then, apply roofing caulk over the screws and along the sides of the fan to prevent leaks.
-
Also, caulk the loosened shingles to reseal them.
08. Connect & Check the Solar Panel & Airflow:
-
Once installed, connect the wiring from the panel to the fan and then, check if the fan is rotating or not and also check for leaks.
-
Plus, check for airflow when it’s sunny and above 85°F to ensure the fan works properly.
-
Check for 10 air exchanges per hour for good ventilation. The more air exchanges per hour, the more you’ll get a cooling effect.
Extra Tips:
-
Always follow the specific instructions given in the fan's manual.
-
If you're unsure about any step, consult a professional.
-
Be fully prepped when cutting the hole to avoid a mess.
